Easily soluble in hot water, soluble in hot ethanol, insoluble in ether. It turns brown when encountering ferric chloride. Reduced by magnesium and hydrochloric acid, it turns red. When carbon dioxide is introduced into the alkaline solution, it does not precipitate.
